You can give it to a horse via intramuscular or subcutaneous. With IM you will want to completely sink the needle into the horse and pull the plunger slightly to ensure that there is no blood (because you don't want the penecillin going into the veins, only muscle) and if there is no blood push the plunger to inject the penecillin. If there is blood you need to pull out and start over.

As for where, it has to be in a large muscle area such as the side of the neck or the rump. You also need to put it in a different area each time. The penecillin makes them sore and causes a lump at the injection site.

How much depends on the weight of the horse. 1 ml for each 100 pounds of body weight. You can find this out by weight taping them. Also, you would give more if they seem to need it because of infection. However, you would not give it to them if they have no infection.

Ensure that you are using clean, new needles each time. You can cause a secondary infection if you inject them with a dirty needle.

And finally, you would give it to them for at least one week but no more than two. If you do not continue with giving it to them the same time each day you would be doing this for nothing. For major infections you would dose 2 times a day for one or two days and then once per day. However, it is much more highly recommended to follow the instructions on dosage and length of treatment for your horse as mentioned on the bottle, on the carton that comes with the bottle, the pamphlet that is in the carton with the bottle, or what is recommended by your veterinarian. Avoid terminating treatments when the horse looks like he is getting better and you still have several injections to go, because chances are a relapse may occur making the illness or infection worse than before.

This will depend upon what type of penicillin you are giving, how much you are giving, what route you are giving and what the penicillin is being used to treat.

This is a question you need to ask your veterinarian who prescribed the penicillin.

The amount of days typically depends on if the infection seems to be clearing up,this usually takes 5 to 7 days. It should be noted for safety purposes that Penicillin is only for bacterial infections and will not kill viral infections such as from the flu.

Dosage is based on the animal's weight. Pen G Procaine (300,000 units per ml) is administered IM at approximately 1ml per 100 pounds of body weight according to the directions on the bottle which places the dosage for a 1,000 pound horse at 10ml. However, a veterinarian may make other recommendations based on the reason it is in use, even requesting that it be injected 2X per day.

There are two other types of injectable Penicillin: Pen G Benzathine (longer acting IM formulation can cause swelling an pain at the injection site) and KPen (administered IV). KPen is generally injected IV 3 or 4 times a day and is more expensive, time consuming and requires more expertise that the IM
injections but can be used to advantage on animals with a catheter in place.

What is the amount of penicillin given in a shot?

Penicillin has very large margin of safety. Usual adult dose of procaine penicillin is 600,000 I.U. (International units) per day. The adult dose of penicillin can be given up to 24 million I. U. of crystalline penicillin per day in meningitis. The first dose of penicillin, that was given to the patient as trial dose was only 5000 I.U. few times per day. It was given during second world war. The most wonderful thing that this small dose did work. The patient started to improve. Later on died of infection, only because the stock of penicillin got exhausted.
