Men from all walks of life went to the goldfields. Farmers, labourers, educated teachers - thousands of them went to try their luck on the goldfields, often leaving their wives and families until they "struck ot rich", which many of them never did. Few women went to the diggings to dig - some went to be entertainment for the men, as this vocation also paid extremely well. There were a great many Chinese immigrants, hard-working people, who also came to the goldfields and were resented for their luck and strong work ethic in persisting until they found substantial parable gold.
