I believe this is a wolf spider... I don't know if this hurts the babies chances of survival... but if you hit the mother with a small stick or something, the babies will pop off like something out of a scary movie : )

Can you have a wolfe as a pet?

In fact you can! I've kept a few and I loved watching them eat the bugs I fed them. A wolf spider is basically a poor man's tarantula. Don't try handling them though because some species can be quite aggressive. When moving them, use a cup that the spider can't get out of. It's a special treat when the spider you're keeping is a mother, because it will carry its eggs and later on babies on its back. The wolf spider is pretty much a cross between a tarantula and a scorpion. Though not actually saying that a wolf spider is a real genetic cross between a scorpion and tarantula.
