Salmon belong to the particular body of water which they enjoy at the moment. This is because a young salmon develops from an egg which has been laid, amongst hundreds of others, by a female and fertilised by a male. This happens in sandy, shingly areas at the heads of rivers. When they are old enough they belong to the sea where they may remain for several years until they find their way back up the very same river which they left to go to sea. There, if they escape the nets and the salmon fishermen, they will fight their way upstream past all kinds of obstacles, like waterfalls, until they reach the same sandy, shingly river beds where they were born. There they ensure that many more young salmon will find their way to the sea once more, by laying or fertilising eggs again.
