The Constitution of Mauritius makes no mention of an official language. English is used in parliament and taught at school but French is more popular and Mauritius is both part of the Commonwealth and La Francophonie. Creole is spoken by about 90% of the population, but is not considered as the "official" language and how to use its grammar is still debated.
In her book entitled Mauritian Education in a Global Economy (EOI, 1994), Sheila Bunwaree says that : " The official language of the assembly should be English but any member may address the chair in French." she uses this quote taken from the Mauritian constitution to explain the semi-official status of french in Mauritius.
