However, most citizens speak Trinidad Creole English which is not taught in schools but is learned as a home language. Internationally Accepted English is the language that is expected for official government business, however, it is not unusual for educated persons in Trinidad to use a mixture of Standard English and Trinidad Creole in speech.

Caribbean Hindustani, French, Chinese, and Spanish are also spoken.

Before Christopher Columbus came, there were Arawak people living there. The islands were taken over by first the Spanish and then by other groups including French, English, Scots, German, Irish, and Africans.
