What lead to World War 1?

The Archduke of Austrohungary Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Serbia, Serbia arrested the assasin, Austrohungary asked Serbia to hand the assasin over to them, Serbia refused. Austrohungary invaded Serbia and Another Country got involved and another and so on until it ended up being a world war.

The assasination of the Austrian Archduke & his wife, was just the final flame to ignite the fire of the World War 1. The assasination plus Serbia's unwillingness to cooperate only added fuel to the fire. The numberous problems already brimming included: 1. Colonialism teamed with rivalry between colonialists in acquired territories in the Dark Continent. 2. Already existing alliances that were partially threatening 3. Mobilization - the Race to acquire arms, ammunition & allies. It is noteworthy, that the cauldron was already brimming over from the effects of the wars in the late 1800s -- Crimean war, Franco-Prussian war, etc. The start of World War 1 was initially considered one of the many small battles between 2 rivalling countries, however due to the various alliances & colonies the world over, this soon evolved into one of the biggest wars the world was to see.

During a parade on the 28th of June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist group in Sarajevo, the capital of Austro-Hungary. Gavrillo Princip, age 19, was a member of Young Bosnia, a revolutionary movement as well as the Blank Hand, a group of Serbian assassins (Yes this sounds a bit "out there" with all the secret assassins and such but it is true). Gavrillo had shot the Archduke and his wife as the driver of their car was attempting to back up after making a wrong turn. Austr0-Hungary was at the time in an alliance with Germany. Austro-Hungary had asked for aid in its invasion of Serbia with the German government responding by giving them full political support. This is the very short answer to a confusing line of events that eventually led to the beginning of a very devastating war. Although this is the immediate cause, there were many underlying causes, such as economic hardships, the rise of nationalism, increase in armaments and the race for colonies.
