The third king of Rome, Tullus Hostilius, was said to have defeated and destroyed the city of Alba Longa (a city which was said to have been as big as Rome) and to have settled its inhabitants on the Caelian Hill in Rome and given them Roman citizenship. This supposedly doubled the population of Rome. Prior to the destruction, a dispute between the two cities was said to have been resolved through a fight between two set of triples, the Horatii (for Rome) and the Curiatii (for Alba Longa). Historians doubt these stories.
The 4th king of Rome, Ancus Martius, was said to have conquered several Latin cities and to have settled many of their inhabitants on the Aventine Hill in Rome. This was said by an ancient writer to have led to the formation of the plebeians.
