Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev was a Russian Chemist who first drew up a periodic chart of the elements known at the time. He left gaps for undiscovered elements. He was born Feb. 8 1834 in Siberia and died Feb. 2 1907 in St. Petersburg. The element Mendelevium (atomic number 101) was named in his honour. It does not occur naturally but is synthesised in atomic reactors. Several isotopes have been discovered but the most stable is mendelevium-258 with a half life of two and a half months.
