A 100 yards behind it you had the support trench and again some 100 yards behind, the reserve trench. There wasn't a real 'hierarchy' anmong trenches: the front line was most important for fighting, but the other two were important for their support facilities, radio and command rooms and as places for soldiers to rest from front line duties.
