Archduke Francis Ferdinand became heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1899, after the deaths of his father and his cousin, Crown Prince Rudolph. However, since Francis Ferdinand's health was poor, most people assumed that the throne would go to his younger brother Otto. This made Francis Ferdinand very bitter.

In 1904 a Serbian student named Gavrilo Princip assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This activated a chain reaction to Austria-Hungary. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary. This made the Austrians feel like striking back for what they did. Soon the Austrians declared war and a few days later the news got to spread all the way to the powers of Europe. Soon the Europians got angry and they wanted to declare war and join up with the Austrians. This was not the only problem that started the World War 1 these things that I am putting down are only just the begining. There are 4 reasons the war was started but you have to find out the answer yourself don't just try and use me for your homework........FOOL!
Austria-Hungry declar war on Serbia in response to the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. However, it was not their intention to cause such a massive conflict, but a series of secret treaties complicated things.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. While driving on a bridge during a parade, 8 men from Serbia, armed with crude bombs and weak pistols, set out to kill the Archduke. The first few didn't do anything at all. Then the 4th one threw his bomb but when it hit the back of the car, it didn't blow up. It exploded about 3 seconds later and injured many people. The next 3 didn't do anything either. The driver made a wrong turn; instead of turning left, he turned right and went down the road. While he was making a U-turn, the 8th shooter shot off 2 bullets. The two bullets that were fatal hit both him and his wife. They both died.

Ferdinand was Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, sometimes called the Hapsburg Empire (after the ruling family) or the "Dual Monarchy" (Austria AND Hungary). The Hapsburgs and their empire had been around for centuries, and controlled most of southeastern Europe. Besides the Austrians and Hungarians, there were dozens of other ethnic groups in this polyglot Empire, and dozens of languages spoken. The murder of Ferdinand was especially galling to the old Emperor, because he had been on the throne sixty years and knew he was going to die soon (he made it another two years). Ferdinand was heir to the throne, and groomed to take over. Ferdinand was in this position because the old Emperor's son had committed suicide around 1880, over not being allowed to marry the woman he loved, a commoner (there's a pretty good old black and white movie about this son and heir called "Mayerling"). So the old Emperor, Franz Joseph, had lost his only son and the original heir, and now he was deprived of his nephew, who was ready to take over. Incidentally, Ferdinand was killed because he showed signs of being a reformer. The Serbs were afraid that Ferdinand, once in power, would make so many accommodations to the ethnic Serbs in his Empire they would lose their nationalistic thirst to get out of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and be united with Serbia.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia in 1914. Despite warnings, he and his wife chose to travel to Sarajevo. The assassinations were politically motivated by the Black Hand to form the country of Yugoslavia from the southern provinces of Austria-Hungary. However, it also started WWI.
The main cause of world war 1 was all of the alliances nations made. It was also because Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a terrorist.
