He gained fame through the Italian and Egytian campaigns. While the Italian campaign was, indeed, successful, the Egyptian campaign was another story. Napoleon was sent to Egypt by the Directory after they felt threatened by his great strategic mind, so they sent him to Egypt to fight the British. Napoleon brought with him the most mathematicians and scientists that have ever formed as a group. However, Napoleon was two-sided. While he would stay by the bedside of a dying comrade, if he knew his troops were losing, he would abandon them. The French were losing against the British in Egypt, so Napoleon essentially ditched them and returned to France. Now, since there were no social media, Napoleon could, in fact, come back to France and say it had been a French victory, and no one would know better for a while - so he did. People saw him as a war hero, having returned alone, so he was given more power, favor, and notoriety. However, the decline in Napoleon's fame coincides with the French finding out about the British victory in Egypt.
