Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was thePrime Minister of the Republic of India for three consecutive terms from 1966 to 1977 and for a fourth term from 1980 until her assassination in 1984, a total of fifteen years. She was India's first and, to date, only female Prime Minister. The speech was delivered at the Inauguration of the All-India Women's Conference Building Complex in New Delhi, on the 26th March, 1980. Indira Gandhi was remembered for her speech 'The True Liberation of Women' that was presented to the 'All-India Women's Conference' in 1980. She refers to the history of women and what they have also provided for the world such as working in one of the wars. She talks about equity and fairness to women as they would do the same job as a man and do not get paid the same. She talks about the recognition women should get for the things they do. She talks about how women should be treated like men and have the choice to work or to stay at home. Throughout her speech, she attacks men for their alleged domination over and discrimination against women and focuses on language and the use of gender-specidic pronouns. She lastly urges women to take necessary steps if men are reluctant to do so. Indira Gandhi was prime minister of India for fifteen years, from 1966-1977 and again from 1980 until she was assassinated in 1984.
