You can help your muscles stay strong and healthy by exercising every day and using different sets of muscles when you exercise.

Muscles need exercise. Exercise is good for all three types of muscles. Aerobic exercise is especially good for your heart, also called the cardiac muscle, because it brings in more oxygen. Aerobic exercise makes your heart muscle stronger..

Physical strength is determined by the following factors, all of them equally important as they all work together;

1) Hormones; the reason a 160 lb male is stronger than a 15% bodyfat 230 lb amazon, is testosterone. Women have spongy muscles, men, muscles that are more akin to silly putty in terms of density; silly putty may be smaller than a wash sponge, but it is still more dense. Also, ethnicity may play a role regarding "sponge muscle syndrome;" owing to their great physical strength as recorded by army reports of the 19th century, the native Americans of north America may be, pound for pound, or were rather, the strongest people in the world alongside black people, the ancient Hebrews of The Bible (read about Jacob, how strong he was), and the Maori of New Zealand. By contrast other ethnic groups have "spongy" muscles; bigger, does not mean stronger, if muscle tissue is less dense.

2) As mentioned in the first item muscle density, and while some ethnic groups may have higher density than others, high density men occur across all races. The reason it is wrong to stereotype white boxers of the past, is because, perhaps the sport of Boxing isolated and weeded out all white boxers EXCEPT those whose muscle density was akin to that of a black man. Again everything falls into the bell curve.

3) Muscle integration, that is how well the muscles work together as a single but complex unit; the secret to feline strength, or part of the secret, is their incredible coordination. In a zoo a while back, a large 550 lb lion killed a ploar bear; here's the kicker though, even a small polar bear can weight up to a ton, it is the largest species of bear in the world. To put that into perspective, that is like Manny Paquiao fighting Brock Lesnar, and killing him with a few well placed hits, if Pacquia had physical strength roughly proportionate to that of a lion, he'd be able to kill Brock Lesnar. Of course he's a man not a lion; in such an encounter Paquiao is the one most likely to get killed if there was bad blood between the two and there were no weapons other than their bodies. Felines are disproporationately strong animals because of their incredible coordination, and, like all members of the feline family lions have it in ADDITION to unusually dense muscles, its the whole reason why lions are so strong. While a tired post on my part on the internet, I'll say it one more time; there is a reason the animal is called "The King." That poor polar bear found out the hard way.

4) Muscle insertions, that is, how long the tendon is which connects your muscle to the bone. Flex your bicep real quick, and look at the tendon at the bottom; is the tendon half an inch long, or is it a full inch to a full 3 inches or more? The shorter the tendon, the more weight it can bear, this is not a new concept; ancient Roman and Greek statues all show men with low muscle insertions, and, sadly, this is genetic, the only way you can compensate for it if your tendons are particularly long is through isometrics, which target the tendons or, tendon training, which is like traditional weight lifting only instead of doing full motions you do short bursts. That is, instead of doing a full curl, you only curl an extremely heavy weight one inch, holding the weight half way. You do a similar thing for your other muscles; the exercises help strengthen the tendons.

5) Finally, oxygenation; believe it or not the size of a man's rib cage is a good indicator of how strong he is. Lung capacity determines how much oxygen he can get to the muscles in a single breath, and oxygen, being a combustible material, helps the nerve impulses generate the necessary heat energy and the muscles cells in turn generate torque. Look at particularly strong MMA fighters such as Thiago Alves, and Brock Lesnar, and look at even, Mike Tyson and David Tua; their rib cages are huge in proportion to the rest of their torso. Brock Lesnar's rib cage looks big enough to hold a manegerie of parrots in there if it were made into a gruesome, morbid cage. "Yeah, last night I murdered Brock Lesnar with a magnum .500, then I surgically removed his rib cage and made this large parrot cage for that large bird you got there....." The larger a man's rib cage in proportion to the rest of his body, the more strength he can generate because the more oxygen he can get to his muscles in a single breath. In Japanese anime, part of the reason many martial artist characters, or brawlers, or outlaw type characters who are portrayed as being good fighters have such large rib cages is because the Japanese have known this for years. In east Asian Martial Arts the breath is emphasized to death, and Japanese research into martial arts has conclusively proven a correlation between lung capacity and physical strength. Believe it or not, the traditional square shape promoted in the western world, is in fact not the best shape for martial arts, what you want is a V taper. Judo has lung expansion exercises you can use if you care to track down Mifune's book.
