The Dead Sea is a body of water in Israel that has a high salt content thus containing a low level of life. It is part of the biblical holy land. But, most of all it is famous for being the area that the Dead Sea Scrolls are from. Specifically a cave in Qumran is the site where several ancient manuscripts were found. They were written just after the time of Christ. These scrolls provide historic and philosophical information about Jesus and his followers.

The very high concentration of salt and other minerals. But that's just the principle, not the famous side effect.

The density of water increases with the amount of salt in it. The denser the water, the greater the upwards force it applies to bodies in it. The concentration of salt in the Dead Sea is so great that a human being will never sink unless he/she forces him/herself in. For more wonders about the Dead Sea visit DeadSeaGuide.com

The Dead Sea has a very high mineral content and nothing seems able to live in it-thus the name Dead. Water flows into this sea but does not flow out. The water carries minerals into the sea and evaporates leaving the minerals (salts) behind.

The Dead Sea does seem to have a medicinal effect on certain skin diseases and people go there from all over for this reason.
