The mushroom you see in the lawn is the fruiting body of an organism that actually lives just under the ground called a fungus. The vegetative part of the fungus exists and grows as a network of string like threads called a mycelium. IT feeds on dead biological material in the soil and when conditions are good it puts up fruiting bodies which produce spores which float off in the wind to set new mycelia.
