How do you make mulch?

There are different kinds of mulch. Some are organic whilst some are not.

The purpose of mulch is to:

• Conserve moisture
• Improve the fertility of the soil
• Improve the health of the soil
• Reduce the growth of weeds
• Enhance the visual appeal of the area

Choosing the right mulch depends on several factors. Including the visual appearance you want, the cost, the chemical effect it has on the soil (pH, combustibility, rate of decomposition, etc) and so on.


Mulch can be made out of:
One or a mixture of organics such as -

• Grass
• Leaves
• Hay
• Straw
• Kitchen scraps
• Comfrey
• Peat moss
• Shredded bark
• Whole bark nuggets
• Sawdust
• Shells
• Woodchips
• Shredded newspaper
• Cardboard
• Wool
• Animal manure
• Compost

Non-organics such as -

• Recycled tyre (tire) rubber
• Plastic
• Pebbles
• Rocks or crushed rocks
• Gravel

Mulch can be made from wood or dead plants like cotton. Hardwood mulch is made from deciduous trees. Avoid the red dyed mulch.
