The detached house of the rich (the domus) was made in stone and had a tiled roof.

Most people in the city of Rome lived in the insulae (singular insula) which were six to seven floor high apartment blocks. These were made with timber and bricks and later cheap concrete. The quality of the build was poor due to speculation and the insulae were prone to collapse or fire.
