There are three layers to structural firefighting gear. Outer Layer (water resistent, protects us from punture), this layer is usually made of a Nomex/Kevlar blend. Thermal Layer (just like it sounds, protects us from heat), and the Moisture Barrier (keeps most moisture out) this is also usually made from some sort of nomex/kevlar blend.
Our bunker gear is made up of Mostly Nomex and cotton there are multiple layers to both our coat and pants. The inner liner is for moisture wicking and the outer is for heat and flame protection.
