The main components to every piano Accordion are the treble keyboard, bellows and bass keyboard. The treble keyboard is similar to a piano or organ and the keys are arranged at right angles to the musical instrument with the tops of the keys pointing inwards towards the bellows. The bellows is located between the treble and bass ends and its main function is to drive air through the tone chamber to excite the reeds producing sound. The left hand side consists of a Stradella bass mechanism which is standard for all piano accordions.

Why is a piano accordion a wind instrument?

The sound is produced by alternate expansion and contraction of the bellows.

How does the piano accordion make its sound?

Inside the accordion are reeds. These reeds are usually made of steel and are placed in a wooden frame. When you blow air over the reed, it vibrates and produces a sound. Each reed is connected to one of the keys on the accordion so that the reeds are covered unless you press a key. When you press down a key, that reed is able to vibrate and sound. The bellows are important because they are the source of air. By moving the bellows in and out, you move air over the reeds.

How does an accordion work?

In relation to piano accordions, the right hand mechanism comprises of a keyboard similar to a piano or organ. Music is played when you press a key which lifts up a pallet. This allows air to enter the tone chamber in either direction, exciting the accordion reeds, producing sound on the pull/push movement of the bellows. The left hand side consists of a Stradella bass system which is standard for all piano accordions. Piano accordions also have treble and bass couplers which are used to change the quality of the sound.

Which part of accordion vibrates to produce sound?

The accordion reed, which is made of highly tempered steel, vibrates when air is driven through the reed plates by the push/pull movement of the bellows to produce sound.

Is a modern accordion similar to a piano?

The right side of a piano accordion, where you play the melody, is similar to a piano, except there are fewer keys and thus a shorter range. On the left side, where you play the bass and chords (accompaniment, the notes are arranged in fifths, and the system is very different from the piano keyboard. On a button accordion the right (melody) side is not similar to a piano keyboard. A piano player will quite easily be able to play the right (melody) side of a piano accordion, but the left side will require additional practice. A button accordion is a completely different system, and the piano player will have no advantage with regards to technique.
