Motte and Bailey castles were first built of wood but, as they evolved they changed into being made of stone. This was because the wooden version burnt down easily and was easily destroyed as wood rotted quickly. The stone castles were then called square keep castles. There was also castles called stone keeps
The earliest castles were of the type called motte and bailey. The motte was an earthwork built to form a mound, with a wooden wall near the top. The bailey was a large space at the foot of the motte, enclosed by a wooden wall.
Later castles were built of stone, where suitable stone was available. In places where building with stone was impractical, castles were usually built of brick.

The earliest medieval castles were motte-and-bailey types that had wooden palisades on a hill, either man made or natural, called a motte, and also surrounding an flat open area, called a bailey.
Later castles were usually made of stone, though temporary castles continued to be made of wood for some time. In places where there was no stone, castles were sometimes made of brick, and a few such castles still exist.

It would have included master craftsmen (meaning those who owned their own businesses, with the help of apprentices and perhaps journeymen) merchants of moderate means, and perhaps certain church positions.
