There are so many units of length.In order to measure the length of pencil the most appropriate unit is cm.

For everyday use maybe, but please note that officially we are supposed to use the millimetre.

Apart from the cubic centimetre, used in chemistry and engine specifications, the centimetre is tolerated but not a "Preferred Unit" in the SI scales we are all meant to use.

The official, named divisions of the Metre are the milli-, micro- and nano- metres. The centi- and deci- metre don't get a look-in, certainly not in science and engineering.
