Since when you need a antacid it's because you have too much acid they are made with a base to neutralize it. Most contain at least one of these: magnesium, sodium, potassium, bismuth, and calcium. Hope that helps a little. We learned this in my EMT class...I guess if someone ever called 911 for heartburn we'd be there for them!!

Any weak base, usually calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate.
