Rather unromantically, the Fifth Symphony was written purely for fiscal reasons, i.e. Beethoven needed money. Count Franz von Oppersdorf commissioned a symphony in February of 1807 and paid Beethoven 200 florins up front to make sure he completed it.

Ludwig described the opening of the 5th as "Fate knocking at the door", or, in his exact words, "Thus Fate knocks at the door". This was attributed to his increasing deafness, and the effects of the tinnitus which preceded his deafness.

During the course of the symphony, the music takes on an increasingly triumphant sound, in symbolic significance of the composer determining to not allow his deafness to stop his passion for music.

The 5th Symphony has been interpeted as representative of Beethoven's struggle against adversity and is one of the first symphonic works to recycle themes between movements.
