In 1931, Japan's militant expansion into Manchuria was motivated by several factors. The first was a simple matter of opportunistic aggression: they took advantage of their weak neighbor, China, to gain control of a rich region. The second was more complex, in that Japan had long intended to take Manchuria as just a first step in conquering China as a whole.
The nation of Japan had designs to become a major industrial power. To do so, it needed resources that it did not have. China and Manchuria had them.
the Japanese expansion of the 1930s was to expand out of Korea and into manchuria which it annexed and call manchukou
In 1931, Japan seized the region of Manchuria in northeastern China. This act marked the beginning of the Second Sino-Japanese War and the expansion of Japanese aggression in East Asia.
Manchukuo.
Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 as a part of a larger strategy of territorial expansion, mostly for its resources. The US and Japan would not be engaged in World War 2 for another 10 years.
Not economics as some have suggested. Instead Japan's aggression was primarily motivated by the lust for territorial expansion & thirst for power & glory for the Army. The Japanese Army, which had control of the Japanese government, was obsessed with the idea of conquering China for many years prior to the July 7, 1937 incident at the MarcoPoloBridge that started their invasion. In 1894, Japan provoked a war with China, to successfully seize control of Korea. In 1895 the Japanese forced the Chinese to give the island of Formosa (Taiwan) to them. In 1904 the Japanese invaded southern Manchuria, starting a war with Russia that controlled this part of China. In 1905 the Russians agree to end the fighting by giving their portion of Manchuria to Japan. In the First World War 1914-1918, Japan seizes territories from Germany: China's ShantungPeninsula, the MarianasIslands, the Caroline Islands and the Marshall Islands. On September 8, 1931 the Japanese Army (without orders from the government) creates the "Mukden Incident' that allowed them to seize the remainder of Manchuria, previously a part of China. This obsession on the part of the Japanese Army was so strong, that it would cause the Japanese to attack the United States (and the British & Dutch) on December 7/8, 1941. The Japanese wanted to prevent the United States from helping China or otherwise interfering in the Japanese conquest of China.

Japanese expansion into Eastern Asia began with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931. It also created a separate puppet state in Inner Mongolia. The Chinese Nationalist capital of Nanking also surrendered to the Japanese in 1937. The Japanese killed as many of 300,000 Chinese in the Massacre of Nanking.
The Japanese took over Manchuria in 1932. This was an attempt by Japan to have control over some of the land that belonged to the Chinese.
