There are 6 muscles around the eye that are responsible for eye movement. They are called the superior rectus, inferior rectus, lateral rectus, medial rectus, superior oblique and inferior oblique. There are two muscles that affect the iris (color of the eye), they are the iris sphincter and iris dilator muscles. There is one more muscle inside the eye called the cilliary muscle which is responsible for changing the shape of the lens of the eye and allows a change in focus from distance to near.

The eyeball itself has several muscles. Six muscles that control movement of the eye and one muscle that controls eyelid elevation. Four control the movement of the eye in the four cardinal directions: up, down, left and right.
The six are the superior rectus muscle, inferior rectus muscle, medial rectus muscle, inferior oblique muscle, superior oblique muscle and lateral rectus muscle.
The muscles of the eye are designed to stabilize and move the eyes.

The pupil is actually a hole in which light can pass through. It is the black center of the eye. The Iris is a lens in front of the pupil, which is a sphincter muscle that allows it to restrict or constrict, depending on the amount of light passing through it. When it is dark, the sphincter opens very big to allow as much light as possible into the eye. When it is light, the sphincter restricts and becomes very small- like a peep hole to not allow as much light into the eye.

Each eye is held in place by three pairs of taut, elastic muscles which constantly balance the pull of the others. The superior rectus acts to roll the eyeball back and up, but it is opposed by the inferior rectus. In the same way, the lateral rectus pulls to the side, while the medial rectus pulls toward the nose, and the two oblique muscles roll the eye clockwise or counterclockwise.

There are a lot of muscles around your eyes that help them to move, but the eye itself isn't a muscle.

Yes. There is the ciliary muscle that opens and closes the pupil to let in more or less light, respectively.

How do extrinsic eye muscles differ in action from the instrintic eye muscles?

Extrinsic eye muscles move the eyeball in relation to the rest of the body, whereas intrinsic muscles move structures within the eyeball.A: The extrinsic muscles control the movement of the eyes. The extrinsic muscles are controlled by the somatic nervous system(voluntary) The intrinsicmuscles control the lens and pupil. The intrinsiceye muscles, (including the iris sphincter, radial pupilodilator muscles and the ciliarymuscle), are under the control of the autonomic nervous system(involuntary)
