The organ belongs to the keyboard family of musical insturments, but it is also a wind instrument as opposed to a piano. A piano uses hammers that strike large strings similar to guitar or bass strings to produce it's tones, while the organ involves allowing air through specific valves to produce it's sound.

The term organ is used rather loosely. A Hammond B-3 (or any "tone wheel organ") is generally referred to as an organ but purists will say that it is not. It falls into the general category of electronic instruments but is in actuality electro - mechanical. Some types of electronic organs attempt to imitate the tone qualities of the pipe organ but some do not. For instance the classic Farfisa used by rock bands of the 60s and 70s has a tone quality all it's own where an Allen, commonly found in churches, imitates the pipe organ. Both are clearly electronic. One imitative, one not.

It's probably safe to say that the modern pipe organ is hybrid as it does not fit neatly into any of the classifications set forth by Schaeffner, Hornbostel - Sachs or the Ancient System. Early organs were clearly wind instruments or aerophones. As soon as organs included sets of chimes they could be considered hybrid instruments. A large, modern organ can truly be considered a hybrid instrument as it may contain, in addition to wind blown pipes, percussions such as a harp stop (actually a type of marimba) chimes, a piano, drums, cymbals, sound effects such as wind and thunder effects as well as electronic stops, which in older modern organs were analog and in newer instruments are digital samples of both organ pipes and other instruments such as orchestral harps.

However, since it does have keyboards, one could technically lump it into "keyboard" category, but it is nowhere even the same as a piano ... the only commonality between the piano and the organ are the keys names.

In the classical sense, (pipe organ) organ music consisted of either solo organ music or as a part of a larger ensemble in which a smaller organ was used - a positive or portative organ, as opposed to a grand organ. Occasionally music has been composed for a grand organ and an orchestra. The organ has also been used an accompaniment instrument for solo instruments. Solo organ music consisted of music specifically composed for the organ or transcriptions of music composed for other instruments. The latter was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century leading the the orchestral school of organ building. In the period between the advent of motion pictures and the development of motion picture sound, theater organs were quite popular. These highly specialized organs were either used for improvisation during films, for performing composed film scores or for performing music of a popular nature before films, during intermission or other times when music was required in theaters. Band organs (such as one would find as part of a merry-go-round) and other types of automatic organs usually performed transcriptions of popular works such as marches and popular classical works such as Strauss' Blue Danube and Rossini's William Tell.
