Many countries worldwide are currently (or were in the past) referred to as the 'fatherland', usually in a patriotic or nationalist context. Countries such as Germany, the USA, Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands were referred to as such.
In the context of D-Day in particular, and of World War II more generally, the 'Fatherland' was a traditional name given to Germany by Germans. As a kind of 'familiar' name, or term of endearment, 'Fatherland' indicated the close bond with and strong loyalty for their country which was felt by many Germans.
