In the assembly of the Estates General the members of the third estate demanded that the assembly as a whole conduct voting now, where each member would have one vote. The king rejected this proposal. The representatives of the third estate viewed themselves as spokesmen for the whole French nation. On 20th June they assembled in the hall of an indoor tennis court, in the ground of Versailles. They declared themselves a National Assembly and swore not to disperse till they had drafted a constitution for France, that would limit the power of the monarch. They were lead by Mirabeau and Abbe Sieyes.
This oath was an important part of the French Revolution. Over five hundred members of the third estate that were not allowed in a meeting of the Estates-General on June 20, 1789 took an oath to stick together until a new constitution for France had been written even though they feared what Louis XIV might do to them. This showed that the people of France would stand up to the king.
It marked the beginning of the French Revolution, and was when the majority of the population (known as the Third Estate) took control of the country.
