The account of the offerings of Cain and Abel (Gen_4:4 f) shows that the ceremony dates from almost the beginnings of the human race. The custom of offering the firstlings and first-fruits had already begun. Arabian tribes later had a similar custom. Cain's offering was cereal and is called minḥāh, "a gift" or "presentation." [my emphasis] The same term is applied to Abel's. There is no hint that the bloody sacrifice was in itself better than the unbloody one, but it is shown that sacrifice without a right attitude of heart is not acceptable to God. This same truth is emphasized by the prophets and others, and is needed in this day as much as then. In this case the altars would be of the common kind, and no priest was needed. ∙ 8y agoIt was Abel's sacrifice that was accepted by God. It was not a matter of what the sacrifice was (Abel was the best of his flock, and Cains was the best of his crops), but a matter of the motive for the sacrifice. It was evident that Abel's heart was complete towards God, and that Cain was motivated by something else.

This too is what we are guilty of when the World gets it's portion of our FIRST 90% and God gets HIS 10% last from our checkbook. Faithful tithers CAN live under a curse too...
Why did God frown at Caines offerings?
Offerings were to be from the best of whatever a person had to offer to the Lord. Abel offered the fat from the first born of his flock. Cain offered some of the fruits of the soil. An offering is to be special, something honorable. It is also a sacrifice, meaning it is something the giver could have used for himself, something needed. This does no mean we are to give foolishly to God so as to have too little to live by, just that the offering represents great value to the giver. While Abel gave the best from the best, Cain gave just some of what he had to offer. Nothing special and it certainly didn't represent anything costly to Cain. God is looking for our faith. To give from one's best means that person is counting on God to support that person even when he's given from his best. To simply give a bit of what you produce leaves you with lots more on which to survive. No faith is required to operate on after such an offering. Finally, an offering is to be respectful. God found nothing of respect in Cain's offering. God wasn't angry with Cain, just disappointed. So God instructed Cain on how to do it. But Cain took it as a personal affront and decided to make Abel pay for the embarrassment Cain suffered after being compared to Abel.
