Its own name tells us the answer - the immune system. Infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus eventually leads to progressive failure of the body's natural defenses, via the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In particular, the HIV virus seems to affect mainly lymphocytes (T cells), macrophages and dendritic cells, leading to a loss of cell-mediated immunity. It is interesting to note that generally one does not die of AIDs per se, but of other infections and sicknesses that rampage the body, which has lost its natural capacity to fight back.
