All animals and plants, and many fungi, bacteria, and protists all need pure oxygen (O2) to survive.

However, every single living thing in the world needs oxygen, in the form of oxygen containing compounds (most importantly is water, a compound that contains oxygen).

The way that organisms get oxygen greatly varies, however. Most, such as bacteria, plants, fungi, and even some animals, simply absorb oxygen through their surfaces. Others, such as fish, get oxygen from the water via gills, and most land animals (reptiles, birds, and mammals), get oxygen via their lungs by breathing air.
