Pain in the lower left side of the abdomen is called left lower quadrant pain. It is often related to the digestive tract, but can also be related to conditions of the body wall, skin, blood vessels, urinary tract, or reproductive organs.
The four quadrants of the abdominal cavity are devided as follows: Upper right - liver, gall bladder, duodenum, right kidney, right adrenal gland; lower right - cecum, appendix, ascending colon, right ovary and fallopian tube (in females), right ureter; upper left - stomach, spleen, left kidney, left adrenal gland, pancreas, the left lobe of the liver; lower left - descending colon, sigmoid colon, left ovary, left fallopian tube, left ureter.

Right and left upper quadrant and right and left lower quadrant
The lower left abdominal quadrant contains liac fossa. This is divided by the doctor.
The sigmoid colon is located in the lower left quadrant of the abdomen.
Using the median plane (vertically) and the transumbilical plane (horizontally), the abdomen is divided into four quadrants:Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)Right Lower Quandrant (RLQ)Left Lower Quandrant (LLQ)Very briefly, some of the major structures/organs contained within each are:RUQ = most of the liver, gallbladderLUQ = spleen, most of the stomachRLQ = appendixLLQ = sigmoid colon
If we look strictly at the abdomen (and exclude pelvic anatomy) the left lower quadrant contains the inferior half of the descending colon, the superior part of the sigmoid colon and loops of ileum and jejunum. Pathologically enlarged pelvic organs or upper left quadrant organs can sometimes be found in the lower left quadrant. For example, ovarian carcinoma's or cysts, bladder, uterine pathologies. From the upper left quadrant, massive renal carcinomas, polycystic kidney's, enlarged spleens. Of course we can sometimes find a littel bit of extra human... during late term pregnancy.
the 9 abdominopelvic regions are: 1 epigastric - located in the right upper quadrant 2 right hypochondriac - located in the right upper quadrant 3 umbilical - located centrally in the right/left quadrant 4 right lumbar - located in right lower quadrant 5 hypogastric located in right lower quadrant 6 right iliac - located in right lower quadrant 7 left hypochondriac - left upper quadranrt 8 left lumbar - left lumbar - left lower quadrant 9 left iliac - left lower quadrant
Four quadrants. Patient's left upper quadrant, right upper quadrant, left lower, and right lower.
