I have heard a really loud and strange gurgling sound from a very hungry snake. I have heard hissing sound with almost a little hiccup or bark at the end. Sounds weird, but he was not happy, and made the same sound several times before leaving my deck. He was after the House Wren babies just hatched.

Baically, when they shed there skins, it gets removed at the end of the tail.

As this process proceeds, each time they shed their skin, it turns into a beed . So, it basically coils up at the end of their tails.

Now what happens is that, as they keep on sheding their skin the coiled up skin starts turning and looking like more beeds....and those beeds are then utilised by rattle snake to warn other animals/organisms to stay away from them since the rattle snake is feeling verry angry!

Just think of it as your beed set. the coils of their skin hits itself and then finally they make a ratteling sound.

take care

They have like a music rattler type. It sounds like a baby toy,but not as peaceful.

No... not really a baby toy. I heard one for the fifth or sixth time today. Imagine the sound a slinky makes when quickly pushed together, but much more stacatto and very, very, very loud and in very quick succession

It's a 'hissing' sound - similar to the sound of air escaping from a tyre.

Why are snakes deaf?

Rattlesnakes are deaf and cannot hear their own rattle, a trait that has sparked two main theories on why they have a rattle at all. The first theory, the Bison theory, states that the rattle evolved to reduce the risk of being stepped on and crushed by bison, and secondly, as a means of warning any bison about not to come too close. The other, but less accepted, theory is that the rattle evolved as a specialization of the enlargement of the tail present in most snakes due to the shedding of skin. Later, this evolved into whatever purposes the tail of rattlesnakes has in today's species. The problem with the latter theory is that it does not give a true explanation of the purpose of the rattle, it merely explains how the rattle could have evolved.
