How did Spanish artist Pablo Picasso create a political statement about the Spanish Civil War in his painting Guernica?

Well it was all set in the Spanish civil war in 1937. Franco, a chief of a Spanish army trying to bomb areas around where guernica is, he was great friends with Adolf Hitler and said he could practice bombing with his airforce on the little town of Guernica. So they waited until it was market day so everyone was out-side and they bombed guernica with innocent people with no pretection for abselutely NO reason what so ever. Katie Melua has written a song about this bombing and you can hear it on youtube, Type in; Katie Melua-Guernica. This song reflects how it was just an ordinary day when hundreds of people died for no reason

Can great works of art bring cultures together?

Of course! One example might be the famous huge mural titled Guernica, painted by the modern Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. The painting is interpreted as a protest of the bombing of the Spanish town of Guernica during World War 2. But people of all cultures can understand it as a protest against the horrors of war anywhere in the world.

Where is the weeping women being held?

Not in that portrait, no. It is simply a weeping woman. This picture however, was painted because Picasso responded to the bombing of the Spanish town, Guernica during the Spanish Civil war by painting the huge mural Guernica, and for months afterwards he made paintings based on one of the figures in the mural: a weeping woman holding her dead child. (Both the figure in Guernica and in Weeping Woman are based on Dora Maar, Picasso's mistress from 1936 until 1944 and also a photographer and artist herself. Dora Marr was infertile and mentally unstable. The dead baby and the weeping are both meant to show both of these aspects of her.

Why did Pablo Picasso paint the picture 'Guernica'?

to show the true horrors of the bombing of the town called Guernica there was also no soldiers in the town. In the bottom middle of the work theres a broken sword symbolizing defeat. this happened on the 26th of April 1937.
