Gerard Butler's most recent notable role was as the Spartan King Leonidas in the film "300", about the Spartan defense against the Persian army and King Xerxes at the famous Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. It is considered by many to be the single most important battle in history - without the Spartan defense and their subsequent sacrifice, which ultimately led to the defeat of the Persians, the world as we know it today would not exist.

However, Gerard Butler's most famous role to date was as "The Phantom" in the movie adaptation of Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber's "The Phantom of the Opera", along with Emmy Rossum as Christine. Like the rest of the cast, he sang all of his songs in the movie.

He has also appeared opposite Angelina Jolie in the second Tomb Raider movie, Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life. Butler played Lara Croft's ex-boyfriend-turned-mercenary Terry Sheridan. She is forced to kill him in the end when he plans to take Pandora's Box from the Cradle of Life.
