I use banana oil to thin out thick nail polish. It works wonderfully and it doesn't dull the color like when you use nail polish remover or acetone. A few drops in a bottle of nail polish and a good shake does the trick.
Banana oil, isoamyl acetate, is an ester (a chemical combination of an acid and an alcohol-- in this case acetic acid and isoamyl alcohol). It can be synthetically produced, and is the same chemical naturally produced in banana plants and in honey bees; it is actually a pheromone produced in the sting apparatus, where it provokes other bees to sting! Mosquitoes are attracted to bananas as well. There seems to be a pattern here.
The banana's flavor is due to the presence of isoamyl acetate, so it is likely that natural oil can be produced from the flesh as well as from the skin of the banana. It can be done with a cold extraction process. Most banana oil today is made synthetically.
