Pumpkins are native to North America and are grown in gardens and fields. The seeds are planted in small hills(mounds) about 18-24in. apart. Sometimes these areas are referred to as pumpkin patches. The vines spread over a large area and the pumpkins sit on the ground and get larger until they ripen.
Pumpkins now grow on every inhabited continent.
Pumpkins are grown in every state in the Contiguous US. So the only states without pumpkin production are Hawaii and Alaska.
