Flax is an extremely useful plant that's been used for centuries to make many different products including fabric, twine, rope, dye, paper, paint, soap, food and medicines. It is one of the oldest plant fibers in the world. The finest grades are used to make linen. Lower grades are used to make twine and rope.


Flax seeds have a high nutritional value due to the presence of lignans and omega-3 fatty acids. Flax seed oil is beneficial to the heart, lowers cholesterol, has anti-cancer properties and may lessen the severity of Diabetes. Whole seeds can be added to salads, cereals, baked goods, pancakes, and many other foods. They have a slightly nutty taste. Ground seeds can be added to soups, desserts, baked goods, ground meats- almost any food, to increase the nutritional value.


Flax is used to make linseed oil which has been used for centuries in paints and varnishes.

Other than the above uses, Flax or Harakeke is used to make bags, flowers, backpacks, floral arrangements, mats, fans and countless other things for everyday use. It is a very versatile plant.

Only the seeds (flaxseed) and oil of the flax plant (flaxseed oil) are used medicinally.
