Homework is practice of the topics taken up in class. Some of it may be review, but really good homework requires that you use what you learned to analyze the material to reach the next step.

There are no studies on this but kids are not mature yet and many of them don't know how to set time deadlines for themselves - that's part of what you learn when you do homework.
