In the books, (which i believe are the REAL Harry Potter) it isn't explicitly said exactly which position James Potter played, however J K Rowling has provided information which can be found on many reputable websites that he was one of the three CHASERS and not, in fact, a SEEKER. The idea that he was a seeker was incorporated into the Harry Potter movies, and does not, as so many things in the movie do not, correlate with the books.
No offence to whoever wrote this answer, but book five, the Order of the Phoenix suggests that James played as Seeker as he is sat at the tree with the rest of the Marauders, catching a Golden Snitch that he stole from a Quidditch match.
This note was taken directly from the Harry Potter Lexicon website and states: In the first film, James was said to be a Seeker (PS/f), but JKR stated that he was a Chaser in the second Scholastic interview. Yes, the editors are aware that on a summer's day when he was 15 he was fooling around with a Golden Snitch - much more effective to impress girls than a Quaffle, of course, and something that proves nothing about which position he actually played. JKR said in Sch2 that James was a Chaser, so until she explicitly says otherwise, her word goes.
The person above me is correct. James only tossed around the snitch for fun and to impress girls. The film makers altered things to where James was a seeker in the films. In the books, it's never specified what position he plays. However, JKR did say that James was a Chaser, not a Seeker.
