Roman medical beliefs were based on those of the Greeks, especially the work of Galen. His work was based on the theory of humorism of the Greeks. It held that that the human body is filled with four basic substances from which all liquids in the body were made (the humors) which were in balance when a person was is healthy. Diseases and disabilities resulted from an excess or lack of one of them. The deficits were thought to be caused by vapors inhaled or absorbed by the body. The four humors are black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. Phlegm has a very different meaning back then. They were to be seen in sedimentation blood samples exposed to the air. They could be seen in sedimentation in blood samples exposed yo the air. A dark clot at the bottom was black bile, a layer of unclotted erythrocytes was blood, one of white blood cells was phlegm and one of clear yellow serum was yellow bile.
