people in the empire followed different religions
After the Kalinga war, Ashoka embraced Buddhism and followed his Dhamma. Dhamma is the Prakrit word for the sanskrit term 'Dharma' which means religious duty. It did not involve worship of god or performance of sacrifices. Rather it was a code of conduct and morals to be followed. It was inspired by the teachings of Buddha and through his dhamma, he wanted to instil a spirit of tolerance, co-existence, non-violence and respect for the elders in the people. He asked his people to speak the truth and respect the elders, follow te path of ahimsa and live together peacefully. -

Dhamma Mahamatras were officials in ancient India, particularly during the Mauryan Empire, tasked with promoting and upholding the principles of Dhamma, or ethical conduct as prescribed by Buddhism. Appointed by Emperor Ashoka, these officials played a crucial role in spreading Buddhist values and ensuring the welfare of the people by addressing social issues and promoting moral behavior. Their responsibilities included the dissemination of religious teachings and the implementation of policies that reflected Ashoka's commitment to non-violence and social harmony.

His leadership marked a significant transformation in governance, emphasizing moral and ethical rule. Ashoka's edicts, inscribed on pillars and rocks, spread his messages of peace and dhamma (moral law) throughout the empire.

The Dharma Mahamatras were basically responsible for going throughout the empire and seeing that dharma was followed. They were to supervise any local rulers in spreading the dharma. Here they're explained in Asokas own words on his fifth rock edict: "In the past there were no Dhamma Mahamatras but such officers were appointed by me thirteen years after my coronation. Now they work among all religions for the establishment of Dhamma, for the promotion of Dhamma, and for the welfare and happiness of all who are devoted to Dhamma."
The duration of The Dhamma Brothers is 1.27 hours.
