Firstly, Earth is in the 'Goldilocks zone' of the solar system, where it receives neither too little nor too much radiation from the Sun. Secondly, and equally important, the composition of our atmosphere gives it just the right amount of insulating effect so that the amount of heat lost at night is only enough to balance what we pick up during the day. Venus and Mars might also be said to be in the Goldilocks zone, but Venus's atmosphere retains so much heat that its average temperature is 864 degrees F,(462 degrees C). Mars has a very thin atmosphere, and this helps to explain the low average temperature (- 67 degrees F, -55 degrees C), and the wide temperature range (- 207 to +80 degrees F), which are conditions much more challenging for possible life.
