Several processes release carbon as gases (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane) into the atmosphere.
Three important processes are fuel combustion, respiration, and methane release.
-- Combustion of carbon-based fuels (wood, alcohol, biogas, or fossil fuels) remove oxygen and combine it to form carbon dioxide and other compounds.
-- Plant and animal respiration release carbon dioxide. This is the reverse operation of photosynthesis.
-- Methane is released from ruminant animals, from decomposition of organisms, and from ocean-bottom clathrate deposits.
the carbon cycle is the process to return carbon in the atmosphere
Carbon dioxide is the waste product of the process of respiration in plants and animals and it is also released into the atmosphere by active volcanoes. The burning of coal and wood
Carbon dioxide is being released. As you breathe in you inhale fresh oxygen, but as you breathe out your body releases carbon dioxide.
Carbon is most commonly added to the atmosphere via the burning of fossil fuels and other carbonaceous compounds. The process of burning or combustion releases water vapor and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Common sources of carbon: -Coal burning power plants -Gasoline powered cars -Forest fires and deforestation via burning -Methane release from swamps Also, the oceans actually act as a large carbon sink or reservoir and because of the nature of carbon dioxide, the warmer that water gets, the less carbon dioxide it can dissolve. As a result, as ocean temperatures increase, they actually lose the ability to store carbon dioxide and more is released into the atmosphere. Photosynthesis actually acts to remove carbon from the atmosphere by fixing it into chemical energy in the form of sugars and releasing pure oxygen in the process.
The carbon is released back into the carbon pool in the atmosphere
One of the key elements in photosynthesis, is carbon dioxide. As we need food, so do plants. Plants do this by taking neutriance water, the suns energy and carbon dioxide to create a substance called glucose. This reduces the amount of carbon in the air, and in the process releases oxygen for us to breathe.
It returns carbon back into the atmosphere.

A tree takes in carbon dioxide, and returns oxygen to the atmosphere.
Just as the Earth's Nitrogen cycle and its Carbon cycle are cyclic, the Earth's Water Cycle is just that; Water Vapor returns to the Atmosphere to complete the Cycle.
