The nymph Medusa was having an affair with Poseidon and they arranged to meet in Athena's temle. Athena got very angry when she found that they had used her temple for this so she turned Medusa and her sisters, who had helped them, into gorgons.

Athena, in her rage, turned the beautiful Medusa and her sisters into the terrifying Gorgons. Medusa was the only mortal of the three, and thus the only one who could be killed.

∙ 13y agoAccording to the oldest stories, Medusa and her sisters, Stheno and Euryale, were children of Phorcys and his sister Ceto, ancient marine deities. The three of them were born in monstrous form.
However, in the fifth century BC, artists begin to depict Medusa as terrifying, but beautiful.
In a late version of the myth, Medusa was originally a lovely mortal maiden and priestess of Athena, but when she and Poseidon lay together in the temple of the goddess, Medusa is punished by being turned into a hideous snake-haired monster, the mere sight of whom would turn men to stone.

In one mythos, Medusa is the offspring (with her sisters) of the primaeval Greek sea gods, Phorcys and Ceto.
In another, Medusa, a beautiful priestess of Athena, lay with (or was raped by depending on version and translation) Poseidon and was cursed by Athena.
