Nixon tried to cover up the burglary of the Democratic party headquarters at the Wategate Hotel and later to impede the investigation of this burglary. When he resigned ,a special prosecutor had been appointed and steps had been taken in the House to begin impeachment discussion. Rather than face impeachment and the resulting trial in the Senate, Nixon resigned his office.
When Nixon resigned, Vice-President Ford took office as President. He appointed Nelson Rockefeller as his Vice-President. Ford later pardoned Nixon for any crimes he may have committed as President. That together with general outrage over the Watergate scandal, opened the way to the White House for Jimmy Carter and the Democrats in 1976.
