They control the rodent and other small creature populations. There have been reports of how people's rabbit, chipmonk, and bird backyard populations went off the charts when their cat died. However due the huge rise in cat ownership the reverse is more commonly true, as most ecosystems have far more cats than they would naturally be able to sustain. It is one reason why so many bird and small animal species are in decline.
