The literature we read and incorporate into our lives. No other literature can shape us individually. We might have heard about Romeo and Juliet, and that can be a cultural influence, but it can't shape you if all you've ever done is heard the names and know the basic story. You have to read it to let it shape you. Similarly, if you read a book that you hate, and you throw it away... it doesn't have power to shape you. We choose how we are changed by literature. We can let it affect us, we can open ourselves up to the story or the experience of reading and absorb... or we can withdraw and just glance at the words.

Literature is written by people who have experienced life. Some writers have experienced intense love, others deep sadness and suffering, some war, some spirituality, some death, hope and despair. By reading their books one can learn second-hand about all these aspects of life and the human condition and experience and learn how human beings react in every situation. Some books, like Moby Dick, explore in depth a single aspect of human emotion, in this case obsessive revenge.

Literature both affects society and is affected by society.

For example, George Orwell's book "1984" described a fictional future in which government controlled and monitored all citizen activity. The novel was written in response to the author's perception that government was growing too large to be effective in its original intent -- to protect people. Its new intent was bordering on control. The book was written to persuade the reader that large government may someday become a force too great to stop by creating so much fear in the people under the guise of protection that the people will support the measures used to control their own slavery.

Even though this book was written in 1949 and indeed the date 1984 has long past, the book is still used to reference the societal impact of the perception that government needs to be kept in check by the people.
