The Netherlands and Argentina faced off in the 1998 World Cup on July 4, 1998 at the Stade Vélodrome. Patrick Kluivert put the Dutch ahead in the twelfth minute, and Claudio López, then of Valencia, scored an equalizing goal for Argentina. The Netherlands had to wait until the eighty-ninth minute to score the winning goal, which was provided by Dennis Bergkamp. The Netherlands were knocked out in the next round on penalties to Brazil.
